Access to health care is becoming a huge burden on Nigerian citizens, especially those in rural areas. The high poverty rate and lack of adequate health insurance are some of the causes of poor health care. Another issue is the economic situation of the country. Medical personnel are leaving the country in droves (the japa syndrome) worsening medical care to Nigerians, especially rural healthcare, and this has affected the people in the rural areas more. The mortality rate is very high in rural areas is very high due to lack of quality medical care.

The Rotary Club of Port Harcourt PHOENIX, understands that government alone can not do the work and that is why we stepped in to bridge the gap in partnership with Lions Club International and Market doctors, was in Okrika for a 2 day medical outreach on 3rd and 4th of July 2023.

The Amayanabo of Kirike Kingdom, HRH KING (Air Commodore T. E. O Ogube (rtd) and his people warmly received us, and it was a fulfilling and exciting time for us as we made the good people of kirike in okrika happy, just like the Rotary song book says; we made new friends and learnt a few words in Okrika language.

Through our medical intervention, we served our community and still introduced them to Rotary. A lot of them were thrilled to hear about Rotary and what we represent. We provided health care in the area of family medicine and eye care for over 183 persons today (day 1) in the outreach.

We also payed a courtesy visit to the palace of the Amayanabor of kirike.

The members of Rotary Club of Port Harcourt PHOENIX are glad that they have created hope in their community.
